how to prepare for a rainy wedding day

Dear bride,

Trust me when I say that I know the biggest cloud hanging over your head (I couldn't resist that pun) during your wedding planning is the fact that it could, and very well might rain on your wedding day. Here's a few helpful tips to helping you prepare yourself for a rainy wedding day (and I promise, it's not the end of the world).

Book Review: You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero

So one of my New Year's goals was to read books. Before this year, I cannot tell you the last time I read a book. I would bet money that is has been at least ten years, and even before that I probably used "Spark Note" or just skimmed the book for a class and called it reading. I was never the kid that would read and just get lost for hours in a book. Fiction, sci-fi, mystery, romance... none of those types of books interested me.

how to plan the perfect proposal

Guys, I'm looking at you. Do you know that girls fantasize about their future husband, proposal and wedding for years? No, really. Like, we plan this stuff out before the exit our mother's womb. And it has probably changed 100 times over because, well, we are women. The point is, whether she has dreamed of you flying her to Paris and getting down on one knee with the Eiffel Tower in the background or being proposed to in front of her entire family at Christmas, most women would tell you al of these things before you pop the question:

I had the privilege of spending some time with AnnaMarie Cua, hair and makeup extraordinaire, and the owner of The Beauty Box Salon and I Am Cua. Her salon is currently the only salon in Columbus that provides 100% organic skincare and hair treatments, which requires special licensing and classes, making her Columbus' only practicing certified organic colorist. The skincare products she uses in-salon are made by a fourth generation herbalist in Hungary. The hair color is from Italy and ammonia-free, making it safe for pregnant women and cancer patients. You will likely be greeted by her dog, Dolce and with floor-to-ceiling windows, an overflow of plants and a funky aqua paint color, you might even feel like you're on vacation.

newly engaged? here's where to start!

It's the beginning of the year and we're almost out of what us wedding professionals so fondly refer to as "booking season." Men are notorious for planning on popping on the question around the holidays, starting as early as Thanksgiving and extending all of the way until Valentine's Day. Girls eagerly await for their boyfriends to turn to fiancés at midnight and bring them some bling to make it Instagram-worthy!

Well, I'm already behind on one of my goals for the year (whoops!), but I'm really excited to be sharing today. I wanted to reflect on my amazing 2017 year as a whole, and then share my goals and visions for 2018 with all of you. To all of my couples who chose me in 2017: THANK YOU. Your business, trust and faith means more to me than you'll ever know. You made 2017 my best year yet, with 12 weddings and 32 portrait sessions!

Lizzy and I go way back. Like way, way back. She is the friend who has been around the longest and we grew up bonding over our love of horseback riding. Through different schools, different colleges, several moves and now different states, we have managed to remain the best of friends. So when she asked me to photograph her wedding, it was a no-brainer, considering I had captured her and her now-husband's relationship since day one, AND all THREE of her siblings' weddings. Man, am I blessed.

I met Julia about a year ago when she interviewed for (and got!) my second shooter position for the 2017 wedding season. Goodness, was I blessed to have her on my team this past year. She has a darling family: Emma, her two-year old and Matt, her husband of four years. They also just announced that they're expecting another little girl next spring! I am so thankful for this girl, for both my business and as a friend.

rachel + ben // proposal

Ben and I have known each other for several years now. We met back in 2013 when we were in the small small group at a church in Pickerington. A bunch of young 20-somethings all connected right away, and we still stay in touch to this day. When Ben reached out to me in early August, I had a feeling it was for a good reason... He had been dating this girl for 6 months or so and seemed to be getting pretty serious.

So when he asked me to photograph their proposal, I was ecstatic, especially for him. Ben has such a big heart, and this girl seemed to be his perfect counterpart. I had never met Rachel, so I was excited for the proposal to have the opportunity to meet her.

Ben and Rachel worked and lived in different cities, so it was only on the weekends they saw each other. Ben had already asked for her parent's permission, unbeknownst to Rachel. His plan was originally to propose at Dawe's Arboretum out in Millersport, and he went as far as to drive out there and scout locations (complete with pictures and diagrams) for the proposal. After making some calls, we discovered due to another event it wasn't going to work. We came together to draft a new plan and he proposed Frank Fetch Park in German Village.

Ben, once again, sent me diagrams and pictures from a visit he made to scout out perfect picture locations. We choreographed the entire proposal through the park and were ready to go. The day of, I arrived early to double check our plan and text him the "go ahead." Since Rachel had never met me, I was just supposed to act like a local student taking pictures of flowers and such at the gardens. I kept a tight eye on them and discretely photographed them until he got down on one knee.

Rachel was so excited, and then put two and two together as to why I was there taking pictures. After "she said yes!" I went up and introduced myself and gave her a hug. I could see that her and Ben were perfect together.

Afterwards, we walked around the neighborhood for some post-engagement pictures. Ben + Rachel, I am so excited for the two of you. I wish you the happiest of months of wedding planning, and an even better marriage thereafter. Thank you for letting me be a part of such a monumental moment in your lives.

Melissa first contacted me after her best friend and maid of honor, Jordan, found me through an online wedding photographer group after putting out some feelers for a photographer. The group is called The Rising Tide (locally known as Tuesday's Together). It's a wonderful thing that has happened recently in the creative industry lately and is the very reason I was able to connect with Melissa and David.

transparency

I've been struggling with these thoughts for months, and I've realized over the past few months what needed to come out of this personal struggle of mine.

I don't feel like there's many people that "look up" to me, however I'm sure there's plenty of people that don't realize I "look up" to them, so in an attempt to break this vicious cycle, I'm coming clean. So, here it goes: transparency.

Andrea and I have known each other for years. Her and I have photography in common, so when she got engaged, I was thrilled to be asked to be her wedding photographer! Her and Dan have had a wonderful relationship over the years. I saw how sweet their relationship was during their engagement photos, and saw how perfect they were together. Their wedding day unfolded like a dream.

Amanda and I met through a mutual friend of ours and during a night of "Speak Out," she shared that her and her husband (yes, you read that right), were doing a "Round Two" for their wedding. After learning that her and Matt got married in the basement of the Alumni Club just before he deployed, I instantly fell in love with their fearless and desire to be together.

Geeta and I went to high school together. We went to a school of almost 3,000 students, though, so her and I never really interacted until a school trip brought us together. In high school, we were both in Spanish class. Every year, the Spanish teachers take a select number of students to a Spanish-speaking country.

Kelsey and I went to the same high school, although she was a year behind me. We had a few classes together and had some mutual friends so we always seem to stay connected. So when her and Dallas got engaged, of course I was thrilled to be asked to shoot their wedding!

Arielle and Erik were my first wedding of 2017! They got married on a beautiful spring day in May and were visited by a massive rain storm just after their ceremony. I met the couple when they booked me before they even got engaged. Yep, that's right! Their engagement and proposal story is pretty cool, so if you haven't already, go check it out here

Years ago, I recruited this couple for a stylized engagement session to my new-to-weddings second shooter ease get her creative juices flowing before we started shooting weddings together. At the time, Natalie and Johnny had recently started dating and they were cute as ever. It just so happened that just a few short years later, just before this shoot took place, Johnny got down on one knee to pop the question, making it perfect timing for yet another stylized engagement session for another second shooter.

Kelsey and I have known each other since middle school. I'm not really sure how, or why, we became friends in the first place, but it has been years! She has a contagious laugh and passion for people that is unlike anyone I've ever met. I'm lucky to call her a friend and to have as many memories as I do with her.

When the year began, I made some goals for myself. Some were the cliché "be healthier" and "pay off debt," but others were to take care of myself, in ways that many people I feel neglect. You see, I'm at a point in my life where everyone is getting engaged, and married, and buying a house, and having kids, and going on lavish vacations. If i'm being honest, I have a bit - okay a lot - of envy.

If you wanted a fairytale, storybook type of love to read about, just go ahead and stop here. Steve and Anna have been together for years, from high school sweethearts and coworkers to enduring different high schools and college semesters abroad without each other.
